Building the Houses

My experience with woodworking is limited. The construction of these houses is the culmination of day dreams, hand sketches, paper mock-ups, building digital files, being a regular at the hardware store, youtube videos, being a regular in the fabrication lab, and nights spent at home covered in different kinds of glue.

I was kind of militant with myself about making sure the visual decisions felt exactly “right.” (The visual decisions I’m referring to are size, shape, typeface, font size, wood type, staining, hardware, number of houses, and a bunch of tiny other details).  I can’t fully explain why these felt right to me in the end. I did have general rationales- things like I wanted the size of the box to feel hand held and intimate, but not too small. But then I would play around with the size- like to the cm- until something just clicked. I decided to just trust this voice and commit to the tediousness of synching with it.

Here are a few more images from the process. I started daydreaming in November of 2017. It is October of 2018. When I cut the pieces out on the laser printer they smelled like burnt marshmallows.
