This is part 1 of a 4 part post documenting the collaborative performance installation between Cessali Fournier and Jaclyn Rawls. The show, titled Home, interwove many aspects of trauma and healing within the context of domestic/family life. Although informed by the past, this show took place in the immediate presence. Home became a living space for healing.
In the images featured above, the bed is shown with it’s protective boundary of broken glass surrounding the bed. We thought of the bed as an altar, and much of our performance work took place within it. Much like the show, our altar evolved over the course of the seven days, taking on more sacred and meaningful objects that further added protection.
The broken glass not only created a boundary around the bed. It created a boundary around the entire show, as we made a rule that no one could enter the space without taking their shoes off. The broken glass is one of the first things they saw when they opened the door into the space. This moment was a non-spoken contract to all participants: either they would come in carefully with intention, or not at all.
